~Myofascial Release Therapy or MFR for short is a type of hands on therapy that involves applying slow and gentle sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to free them and thus reduce pain, increase range of motion and relax the body and mind.
MFR is different than traditional deep tissue massage because pressure is maintained until a deep softening occurs instead of barreling through tough areas like a bulldozer. Waiting for the releases is when the body opens up to the change and allows it to happen. Tension eases, knots become untied, fascia becomes more pliable and motion is restored.
MFR is most successful when a series of sessions are scheduled close together. For most people, accumulated stress, habitual poor posture, old injuries and emotional traumas have been layering on over the years and they are not going to disappear in one session. The body is complex and many times the cause of pain is found beyond the site of pain. It takes a little detective work and a whole body approach to create lasting change. I encourage you to take the time for yourself and try MFR.
John F. Barnes, PT is the founder of Myofascial Release and has been treating clients and teaching therapists for over 40 years. All of my MFR training comes directly from the source.
